Usa esta guía para reemplazar el disco duro SATA de tu PlayStation 3 Slim por otro con mayor almacenamiento o más rápido.

Nota: Cualquier unidad SATA de 2,5 pulgadas con una altura inferior a 9,5 mm encajará.

    • Voltea la PS3 y déjala reposar sobre su parte trasera.

    • Usa el borde plano de un spudger para abrir la pequeña puerta de acceso en la cubierta trasera cerca del frontal de la PS3.

    • Quita el tornillo azul Phillips escondido debajo de la puerta de acceso.

    The access door is self-retaining and hinged on the left side. Use the spudger to pop up the door a bit, then rotate the door out of the way.

    Just make sure you have the right screwdriver for the job - Due to over tight screws it is easy to make the screws be not able to unscrew.

    Thomas - The OS gets re-installed when you power up for the first time with the new hard drive installed - It was a while back now when I did mine - You either get the PS3 to download it automatically or you can put the file you download from playstation.com on a memory stick and point the installer at that.

    Swiss army knife with a phillips attachment worked perfectly. The cross handle undid in about half a second per screw what I couldn't undo for 10 min with a small electronics screw driver :/

    I did not get an option to download, so had to use a memory stick.

    Once you download the PS3UPDAT.PUP file from sony you need to put it on a FAT-32 formatted memory stick in the folder /PS3/UPDATE/

    Du musst die ps3 firmware hier herunterladen. http://deu01.ps3.update.playstation.net/...

    Danach nimmst du einen beliebigen USB-Stick, formatierst den auf deinem Computer als Fat32. Dann erstellst du auf deinem Stick einen Ordner namens PS3 in diesem Ordner erstellst du einen weiteren Ordner namens UPDATE. In den UPDATE Ordner kannst du dann die „PS3UPDAT.PUP“ Datei die du heruntergeladen hast reinkopieren. Danach kannst du den USB-Stick an die PS3 anschliessen, die Konsole einschalten und den Anweisungen auf dem Bildschirm folgen.

Para volver a reensamblar tu dispositivo, sigue estas instrucciones en sentido contrario.

Yes, but do not expect huge performance improvements, especially if you run games from a physical format (i.e. Blu-ray disc).

You definitely can. That will give you less heat to deal with, less noise and vibrations... But the speed gain will probably not be that significant as the PS3 is limited to SATA 1 if I recall correctly...

Replacing it with a 7200 RPM HDD would be more worth it on the price/quality ratio, as 2.5" 500 GB HDD are pretty cheap nowadays.

The blue Phillips screw that allows me to access the hard drive way is so incredibly tight that it's, for me, impossible to remove. Do you have any suggestions?

Another point forgotten in this article is the exact dimensions ( x/y/z ) of the bay and hdd so a SSD can be used.  One size does NOT fit all.

Do you need to format the new ssd before you insert it or is it possible afterwards?

The PS3 will format the drive for you. But you do need a USB drive formatted with a FAT32 file system and the firmware inside /PS3/UPDATE/ in order to install the OS into the drive you’ve just installed in your PS3.

I was very pleased to find this guid thanks to the help of Andrew Bookholt and many others like him from Ifixit. However, I feel that I should mention in my own experience it is really easy to break the screws that hold the HDD in its spot on the HDD tray, and I would recommend being careful about putting too much force on the screws because it doesn't take a lot to completely break them. They break quite easily compared to others I've used in the past and I had to force one of these broken screws out to remove the HDD. Fortunately, I had all the mounting screws from an old PC case for an SSD that worked perfectly with the new SSD that I installed. If this happens to you, make sure you have an extra set of screws on you.
